Toddler Ribbon Skirt tutorial

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 1 ½" wide ribbon for waistband, 2 yds
  • 5 colors of ribbon ¼"-3/8"wide, 3 spools each color
  • ¾" ribbed non-roll elastic, 1 yd
  • Basic sewing supplies
  • Sewing machine
DIRECTIONS:
SEAM ALLOWANCES 1/2".
1. Cut 1 piece of 1 ½" wide ribbon 31" long. With right sides together, sew short ends together for the waistband.
2. Cut one piece of 1 ½" wide ribbon 32" long. Fold back short ends 1" on each end and press for waistband facing.
3. With wrong sides together, long edges even pin the waistband to the waistband facing so seam of waistband matches up to folded ends of facing. Edge stitch long edges.
4. Cut ¼" and 3/8" wide ribbons 20" – 24" in length. Varying lengths of ribbon will give the skirt a more irregular, “whispy" hemline.
5. Fold ¼" and 3/8" ribbons in half and stitch fold to one long edge of waistband. Overlap folded ribbon about 1/8"-1/4" on to waistband. Add folded ribbons as you stitch overlapping ribbons slightly for more fullness in skirt. Stitch ribbons all around skirt backstitching at beginning and end..
6. Cut elastic to desired length for waist. Insert elastic through opening on inside waistband. Overlap ends 1" and stitch.
7. Whip stitch opening closed or leave it open for any later size adjustments.
