How to: Estimate Upholstery Yardage

Did we mention that Waverly 54" Home Decor Fabrics are 60% off this week? Through June 26 the gorgeous colors and patterns available are at the lowest prices of the season.

But how much should you get to cover that antique armchair you purchased at that estate sale? Or to create a fresh look for your living room furniture?

Here's a handy chart to help you estimate yardage (so you don't have too much, or even worse, too little!) for your sectional couch, armchair, patio furniture, or even that rolly desk chair in the office -- and everything in-between!

  1. Thanks, this is helpful...just a couple questions: I'm redoing a about four kitchen chairs, and I only need seat pads. It doesn't look like any of the drawings on the chart depict a chair with only a seat. Second, since these are kitchen chairs, is there a preferred type of fabric to use to cover them? Thanks!

  2. Hi Geoff :) Measure the seat area, and give yourself a few inches on each side (for wrapping over). You may only need a little more than a half yard for each chair. Canvas or outdoor fabrics may work best for kitchen chairs -- especially with liquid spills, etc. I hope this helps! -Kim @ Jo-Ann
