SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
- Premier Yarns Deborah Norville Cuddle Fleece: Snow Day – 5 balls
- Needle: US Size 11, 24" (or longer) circular needle or size needed to obtain gauge
- 8 mm crochet hook
- Four 2" plastic rings, yarn needle
- 1/2 yd fabric for lining (optional)
- Matching thread & sewing needle (optional-for lining)

GAUGE
12 sts x 16 rows = 4" in St st

PATTERN NOTES
Circular needle is used to accommodate the bulk of the stitches used in the side/bottom piece. All knitting is done flat.
BAG
Front
Cast on 35 sts.
Top Edge
Knit 12 rows.
Body of Bag
Row 1 (RS): Cast on 2 sts using knitted cast on, knit to end. Row 2: Cast on 2 sts, purl to end – 39 sts. Continue in St st until bag measures 7" from beg of Body, ending with WS row.
Shape Lower Edge
Dec row: K1, k2tog, knit to last 3 sts, ssk, k1 – 2 sts dec’d. Next row (WS): Purl.
Rep these 2 rows, 3 more times – 31 sts rem. Bind off all sts.
Back
Work as for front.
Side/Bottom
Cast on 90 sts. Knit 20 rows. Bind off all sts.
FINISHING
Flap
Locate row of garter st from Top Edge of Back piece, just before Body of Bag begins. With RS facing, pick up and knit 7 sts along center of this row. Work back and forth in garter st until flap measures 5". Buttonhole row: K3, [yo] twice, ssk, k2. Next row: K3, [k1, p1] in double yo, k2. Knit 2 rows.
Shape Flap End
Next row: K1, k2tog, k1, ssk, k1 – 5 sts rem. Knit 1 row. Next row: K1, sk2p, k1 – 3 sts rem. Next row: Sk2p. Fasten off last st.
“Button"
With crochet hook, ch 2. * Yo, insert hook into second ch from hook, pull up a loop, pull through 2 loops on hook; rep from * 2 more times, yo, pull through rem loops on hook. Sew button to Front piece, centered, on the corresponding
Flap Tassel
Cut a piece of cardboard, 5" wide x 6" tall. Fold the cardboard in half, so it is 3" tall on each side. Insert 8" strand of working yarn bet folded cardboard. Working with separate strand of yarn, wrap yarn around cardboard 8 times; cut this strand. Tie 8" strand around wrapped strands, pulling taut. Cut opposing ends to open the tassel. Wrap ends of the 8" strands around the top of the tassel, hiding ends inside. Sew tassel to end of Flap.
Straps (make 2)
Around 1 plastic ring, work 16 sc, join with sl st to first sc; do not break yarn. Ch 32. Work 16 sc into a second plastic ring, join with sl st to first sc. Working along ch, DC in each ch to first ring, join with sl st to top of ring. Fasten off.
Secure one set of rings to both front and back of bag. Tack each ring in place on Top Edge at bottom and sides of rings.
Sew Bottom/Side (knitted) piece to Front and Back (knitted) pieces.
Tack edges of Front and Back tog through the 2 cast on sts at beg of Body of Bag.
Lining (optional)
Using Front or Back piece as a template, cut out 2 pieces of fabric that are the size of the main Body only, omitting depth of Top Edge, leaving ½" around all edges for seaming. Using Bottom/Side Piece as a template, cut out 1 piece of fabric, leaving 1/2" around all edges. Sew Bottom/Side piece to Front and Back. Turn under 1/2" at top edge. Place lining inside bag. Sew to inside of bag along edge bet Top Edge and Body using a whipstitch.
Weave in ends.
I would call this Knit Spot Satchel since only the "button" and straps are constructed with a crochet hook/stitches.
