Lookin’ Fly on Bow Tie Friday

Forget Casual Friday! Bow Tie Friday is much more fun than business casual. Guest post by Toby Liberman

"Bow ties are cool" – The Doctor

Bow tie devotees range from Winston Churchill, Humphrey Bogart, Frank Sinatra and Steve Jobs (before the turtleneck) to popcorn mogul Orville Redenbacher. Jude Law, Kanye West and Ashton Kutcher wear them with flair. And when Matt Smith debuted as the bow tie-wearing Eleventh Doctor in the British sci-fi television show Doctor Who, demand for bow ties skyrocketed.

This is a classic thistle freestyle shape. “Black tie” doesn’t need to be taken literally. Have fun with the fabric!

• Go glitzy with SUEDEsays Special Occasion Fabrics.
• Go geeky with Marvel Comics, Star Trek, Paul Frank Julius & Star Wars.
• Go team with your favorite MLB, NCAA, NFL & NBA teams.
• Go rugged with printed burlap.
• Go USA with patriotic prints.
• Go where the spirit takes you with monkeys, musical notes, retro mod or chili peppers with our novelty quilting fabric.
NOTE: A good stiff interfacing is key for a bow tie that will tie up well.

Bow ties represent old-world style, but Bow Tie Friday is not just for men. Gals, tots and even our four-footed friends can wear them, too. These freestyle, ready-tied and clip-on bow tie projects use everyday materials to turn a traditional bow tie into wearable art or a jaunty symbol of your wacky personality.

This is extra adorable with a bit of bling! Make it with sequined yarn.

Very dapper and waterproof to boot! It attaches with a pin brooch on the backside of the bow, so you don't even need to know how to tie a bow tie.

Make these with the kids before your next trip to the Science Center. Cut bow tie shapes from colorful poster board. Attach a small binder clip to the back of the bow tie with duct tape. Decorate with stickers.

You’re never too young to look good, don’t you agree?

You need a scrap of thick felt, flannel, canvas or fleece, a sharp scissors and a hot glue gun. I like Emma’s dapper doggie project because it’s so simple and doesn’t require sewing.

Are you feeling inspired? So give it shot; create a bow tie that expresses your unique personality. Then wear it with confidence (and a big smile!) next Friday.
