Today we have Sweet Paul from Sweet Paul magazine here to share one of his fantastic projects. Be sure to check out Sweet Paul's thoughts on creativity, too!
For this project, I was inspired by fall's amazing jewel-like tones. I adore dying fabrics, actually, I love dying just about anything that's not nailed down! This fall tablescape is made up of a stunning runner, lovely napkins, charming vases, ribbon for a hostess gift and whimsical place cards. I used my eye to cut most of these pieces, as I think part of the charm is the irregular look. My motto is perfection is boring!
What you'll need:
RIT Liquid Fabric Dye - I chose jewel tones (yellow, green, blue, bordeaux and brown)
Several yards of linen
Scissors
Glass vases or jars
Little wooden bird cut-outs
Plastic bins to dye in
Waterproof gloves - to avoid colorful hands!
This project is just as simple as it looks.
1. First, prepare your pieces to be dyed. I cut 22"x22" squares of linen for my napkins. I frayed the edges about .5" on each side, a table runner (mine is 15"x72"), 4"x8" strips for my vases and then several yards of 1" strips to use for hostess gift ribbons.
2. Next, prepare your dye baths according to each package instruction.
3. Now for the fun part, begin dipping your items into the dye. I did half of each piece at a time. For the ribbon I just used one color. For the wooden pieces, drop them in the dye and let them sit a bit, the wood soaks up the dye differently.
4. Allow half-dyed pieces to completely dry.
5. Now go back for your second color. Repeat the process, dying up to the edge of your first color.
6. If you want, you can do many colors on your pieces, I especially like to do this on the long runner. The effect is just stunning!
