In case you haven't already seen her on The Today Show, Katie, or any of the number of national publications and websites she's graced (like People, Forbes or Huffington Post) allow us to introduce you to Brit Morin, craft hacker extraordinaire and our influencer for December.
Dubbed by the press as “Silicon Valley’s Martha Stewart,” Brit Morin is Velcro Industries brand spokesperson and the founder & CEO of Brit + Co., an online platform and e-commerce company that inspires and enables the digital generation to make. You can find Brit + Co. at Brit.co and can preview the company’s first of many software apps, a social wedding application, at Weduary.com.
As part of our Creativity Made Simple campaign, Brit took time to share her thoughts on creativity and what keeps her inspired. We all know that making time to craft and be creative isn't always easy, and that's what Creativity Made Simple is all about: carving a little bit of time out of your crazy, hectic day to do something you truly love and make time to create.
After you read the Q&A with Brit, make sure to check out the super cute DIY Holiday Tree tutorial made with VELCRO® brand products that she created just for us!
How do you make time to craft/hack?
For me, finding time to make is natural. I'm very curious, and love to experiment. Usually, it's harder for me to narrow down what I'm going to make, rather than when I'll make it. Sometimes, I end up making multiple things at once.
Last weekend, I kept jumping back and forth between making ice cream, painting a lampshade and sewing an LED skirt. The lampshade is now on my desk at work. I'm still working on the skirt. The Strawberry Balsamic Ice Cream was delicious, and by far the most satisfying project.
Who/what was your influence to craft/hack?
When I was growing up I actually taught myself more traditional "home making" skills. I taught myself to cook and to French braid. My first sewing project is still one of my favorite projects. It was a purse made out of empty Capri Sun cartons. I have to say it's still one of my biggest teenage accomplishments; and if you're wondering, yes, it was awesome and I got all kinds of compliments.
Name one crafting/hacking item you can’t live without.
Believe it or not, I have to say the Internet. The web is the best place to discover new materials, technologies and ideas. As I said, I'm extremely curious, and love to experiment with new supplies all the time. The web is the best place to find them.
Someone says: "I’m not creative." How do you respond?
I actually don't believe you can say "I'm not creative." Every person is innately creative. That's why as kids, we're constantly building with blocks and painting with finger paints. Somewhere along the way, we trick ourselves into believing we aren't creative. Well, we are creative—you are creative. That's why I started Brit + Co. I want to help people rediscover their creativity. Ready to rediscover yours? Velcro USA Inc.’s “Hack the Holidays” contest is a good place to start!
