Monsters University Themed Craft

We've been celebrating the DVD release of Monsters University and we are so excited about our Monsters University Themed Craft! How cute is Mike?

This project is perfect for a party or a classroom project! It's easy to put together and a fun project that kids will love to bring home with them!

Here's how to make your own:

Skill Level 2 - Some experience necessary.
Approx. Crafting Time: 1 - 2 hrs.

Supplies & Tools: (makes 30)

1 1/2 yd Calla Green Rayon Knit Spandex
4 sheets 9" x 12" Royal Blue felt sheet
Thirty 4" Styrofoam® balls
1 pk 25mm glue-on eyes
2 pks 3/16x12" dowels
Tacky Glue
Amazing Goop® glye
White Tulip® Slick® fabric paint
Crayola® Model Magic® 4oz, Bisque
Scissors
1 pk craft sticks
Ruler
2 sheets white paper
Black marker
Unopened Mod Podge®

Directions:

Prior to starting the project, cut Calla Green rayon knit spandex into fifteen 3/4" x width of fabric strips. It is important to have the strip length go from selvage to selvage. Pull on the ends of the strip so that the fabric naturally curls. Cut each strip into four 4" lenths & four 5" lengths. From blue felt sheets, cut thirty 2 1/2" circles. Tip: Use bottom of bottle of Mod Podge® as a guide/template to cut out circles. Also cut from the felt thirty 1 1/4"x1" rectangles. Round off 2 of the corners on the 1 1/4" side.

Horns:

1. Create Horns using Bisque Model Magic®. Form a pea size amount into a cone. Repeat for a second horn. Set aside.

Hat:

1. Cut a slit from one edge to the center of the blue felt circle.

2. Fold the felt into a cone shape approximately 1 3/4" wide and glue both edges. Once glue is dry, fold the cone inside out so the "hat" does not have a point at the top.

3. Use white fabric paint to write "MU" on the front of the hat. Set aside & allow to dry.

Body:

1. Using a craft stick, carve a line around the circumfrence of the Styrofoam® ball, about 1/4" deep.

2. Place one 6" square of Calla Green rayon spandex on one side of the Styrofoam® ball. Using a craft stick, push the fabric into the groove created, stretching the fabric to avoid wrinkles. Repeat for the opposite side.

3. Push a dowel rod into the groove on the Styrofoam® ball; this will be the pole for the puppet.

4. Tie a knot on one end of each 4" & 5" knit strip & glue the other end into the groove on the Styrofoam® ball. The 4" pieces are the arms & the 5" pieces are the legs. Cut the puppet's "fingers" & "toes" in the knotted end.

5. Glue the 25mm eye to the front using Amazing Goop® glue.

6. Cut out a mouth from white paper. Use a black marker to color in the mouth, referencing picture. Adhere mouth to the front of the fabric covered Styrofoam® ball using tacky glue.

7. Glue 1 1/4"x1" blue felt rectangle to the top of the fabric-covered Styrofoam® ball just in front of the groove; this will be the bill of the hat. Once the fabric paint is dry, glue the top of the hat to the top of the fabric-covered Styrofoam® ball, overlapping the bill slightly.

8. Carefully  glue the horns to the top of the fabric-covered Styrofoam® ball.
